Workers at a Montreal casino are considering holding a strike over the course of the upcoming Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend in Canada. The Casino de Montréal employees issued a statement over the weekend to announce that they had received 91% support for a five-day strike mandate.

The group said they will now choose an “opportune moment” to hold a strike, such as during the Montreal Grand Prix. The event takes place between June 16 and 18 at the Gilles-Villeneuve track, which is beside the casino. The race is always one of the biggest tourism events in the city during the summer. Workers at other casinos in the region are also considering strike action, according to local news reports.

Casino de Montréal workers have been pushing for a wage increase since last year, demanding the equivalent of the rise in the cost of living plus $1 per hour. Loto-Quebec, the property’s operator, has reportedly already made two rejected offers to these employees.

Table game dealers are not part of this dispute as they have a different union and secured their own wage increase in August after going on an unlimited strike.
