Denmark Online Casino & Gambling Guide for 2024

Denmark

Online gambling in Denmark has changed significantly over the last few years. What was once a closed shop for offshore operators is now often held up as an example for other countries on how to regulate the gambling industry.

Until 2010, all gambling in Denmark was monopolised by the state-owned operator, Danske Spil – the only company licensed to accept bets in the country. With the introduction of Act no. 848 on 1 July 2010, this started to change, and came into full effect in 2012. This allowed international operators to go through the Denmark online casino license process with Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority, for the first time.

Danish players enjoy gambling as much as any other population, and some of the most common forms of betting in Denmark include horse racing, football, lotteries, and even pigeon racing. However, it is the first Scandinavian country to properly relax its rules on online betting.

Denmark is now a tightly regulated country where residents over 18 can enjoy online casinos. Denmark also has some of the best safeguards in place for gamblers. Let's check out which online casinos in Denmark allow you to deposit and withdraw Danish Krone (DKK).

Danske Spil still operates in Denmark and offers casino, poker, bingo, and lotto to Danish customers. As expected, with the relaxation in gambling laws, bigger offshore sites have begun supplying games. Unlicensed gambling sites are dealt with swiftly in Denmark, and many offshore rooms have found themselves blacklisted.

Most large casino operators and software firms now have Danish Gambling Authority licenses and several big operators such as 888 and Ladbrokes were quick to apply for licenses and start operating in Denmark. There are now close to 200 licensed sites that accept Danes. Many of them offer online casinos in Danish and accept deposits and wagers in Kroner. Some software giants have a dual license from Denmark that allows them to cover both casino games and sports betting. EveryMatrix is one such example.

When it comes to online slots, Denmark casinos do not disappoint. Most leading operators like Swedish firm NetEnt and Microgaming hold Danish Gambling Authority licenses. Therefore, Danes can expect to find big-name slots with progressive jackpots like Mega Fortune, Mega Moolah, and Major Millions. Players who enjoy casino slot games have a huge selection to choose from in Denmark.

Of course, table games are a core element of any casino. Denmark online casino sites, including those on our top list, have a number of popular table games on offer. If you’re looking for online poker, Denmark also has a wide variety of options. You can play poker online in Denmark at several of our recommended casinos. Blackjack, baccarat, roulette, and other fan-favorite games are available at Demark online casinos as well.

Denmark also allows real money live casino games, at online casinos,. These enable Danish gamblers to play against a human croupier for DKK via webcam. Live Blackjack, Live Three Card Poker, and Live Roulette are most common, depending on the software operator.

Best Deposit Methods for Danish Players

Online casinos for Danish players allow you to make deposits and withdrawals safely in DKK. However, make sure the casino does accept Danes. Just because the Cashier has DKK in its list of accepted currencies, doesn't mean that Danish players are allowed to sign up. For a safe and secure experience, stick to our list of top Denmark online casinos. You’ll find that most online casinos in Denmark accept a wide range of deposit methods, including the ones below.

EntroPay

EntroPay is a secure and quick payment method accepted at many online casinos. It works like a Virtual VISA card that can be topped-up with cash. The money is then transferred to the casino Cashier as normal. An EntroPay account is normally set up in GBP, USD, or EUR, but at online casinos, Denmark customers can use the service in DKK.

Neteller

Neteller was one of the first e-wallets set up to support gambling payments. The third-party processor allows digital wallet holders to fund accounts via multiple sources like cards and bank transfers. With a handy Neteller ID and 12-digit account number, Danish casino players can transfer DKK easily and safely.

Other e-wallet services are fairly common at online casinos, even in Denmark. Though if you choose to use them, it’s likely you will have to pay a fee to convert to the proper currency.

Visa/MasterCard

Leading credit card providers are a great way to fund casino accounts. Visa and MasterCard can both be used at licensed online casinos. Denmark also allows its residents to deposit using a range of local debit cards too. As always, watch out for cash advance fees on your DKK deposit. This can add up to 3% of the deposit amount on your transaction.

Safety & Security at Online Casinos in Denmark

Denmark players should always feel safe and secure at any online casino. The gaming experience should be top-notch, and the site should have high-end security to protect player information and data. That’s why each casino on our recommended sites list, players in Denmark can rest assured we have researched every option carefully. Here are some important things to look out for when choosing an online Denmark casino.

Customer Service

Support is a top criterion by which we judge Denmark online casino sites. Our recommended sites include 24/7 customer service, and many even offer support in Danish.

Proper Licensing

Denmark allows many online casinos to operate within its borders, so the market is generally very safe. However, if you want to be certain you’re using a legal and licensed online casino, scroll to the bottom of that casino’s webpage. Check for a licensing badge or a separate page linking to license information so you can confirm the operator can offer their casino in Denmark.

We only recommend sites that are allowed to operate in Denmark. You’ll have a safe and above-board experience with any of the online casinos on our list, even if these gambling sites are based in other countries.

Online Casino Denmark Bonuses

All online casinos have bonuses, but under Danish gaming law licensed sites must allow players 60 days minimum to clear an offer. This is great news for Denmark online casino enthusiasts because operators can’t put restrictive time limits on bonuses.

If you’re looking for more online casino bonuses, Denmark sites have plenty to offer. Casino bonuses come in many shapes and sizes as you can see below;

No Deposit Casino Bonus

No deposit bonuses are very common in the online casino world, Denmark included. When a player signs up for an online casino, they receive a small bonus usually ranging from 30 DKK to 100 DKK. Amounts vary based on the individual casino’s offer and currency conversions. And that’s it! No strings attached. No deposit bonuses are simple and effective. They get you started with online casinos in Denmark and don’t even require you to fund your account.

Free Spins

For players who want to take a few risk-free spins on a casino slot, Denmark online casinos sometimes offer free spins bonuses. Players can use free spins, which come in batches as low as 5 and as high as 100, to give the slot reels a spin without placing a wager. You keep any winnings, making it an especially lucrative offer if luck is on your side.

Match Bonus

Match bonuses live up to their name. Make a deposit, and the Denmark online casino will match the amount, giving you more real money to spend at the casino.

Watch out for the terms and conditions on these. Some only allow you to match your first deposit, and almost every deposit match comes with a cap. Denmark online casino player will find deposit matches at many sites, including most of those on our expert list.

Licensed Mobile Casinos in Denmark

Mobile casino gambling is legal and widely available in Denmark. All mobile casinos must carry the proper licences to operate. You can still find hundreds of legal games via mobile phones even though these restrictions exist.

Luckily, most of the leading mobile slots providers are licensed in Denmark. NetEnt and Microgaming both have large portfolios of slots adapted for iOS and Android touch-screens.

Denmark’s Gambling Laws in 2020

All gambling in Denmark is overseen and regulated by the Danish Gambling Authority. This is an independent government agency working under the umbrella of the Danish Ministry of Taxation. It regulates and licenses all gambling in the country, including Denmark online casino gaming. Everything from online poker, to lotteries, slots, and casinos comes under the Danish Gambling Authority's remit.

When Act no. 848 from 1 July 2010 set up a framework for licensing and regulating all gambling in Denmark, the monopoly previously held by Danske Spil came to an end. Two years later, the executive order no.67 was issued to handle the regulation of online casinos. This executive order covers land-based betting operations, web-based betting and online casinos.

When the Danish Gambling Authority added online sports betting and other games to the executive order, it opened the doors for overseas companies to apply for combined Denmark online casino and betting licences in order to offer games to all Danish players.

The change in law in 2012 kickstarted a period of liberalisation for the Danish betting industry. The Danish Gambling Authority quickly issued licenses to 25 operators in the first year. The authority also signed a bilateral agreement with the Alderney Gambling Control Commission, and announced that foreign operators could apply for licensing even if they don’t have offices in Denmark. However, this would have to be approved by the authority before they could begin operating in the country.

Danish laws provide a structured system for the licensing and regulation of online gambling services. Operators must have an office in Denmark, and they must have a reporting system that complies with local tax laws. The Danish authority is meticulous about which operators it will grant a license to. This creates an excellent market in Denmark for online casino players, as only operators who pass the rigorous process can offer their sites to Danish gamblers.

This law also requires internet service providers to comply with blocking requests of unlicensed sites, after gaining a formal court injunction from a judge. In 2018, a Danish court ordered these same local service providers to put a block on 24 unlicensed offshore betting sites.

Tax rates for casino operators are high in Denmark; with 28% Corporation Tax and a further 20% in additional gaming tax. Surprisingly the industry is still booming. The Danish gambling industry was worth over 4.3bn krone (kr.) in 2017, with a big increase seen in Denmark online casino revenue.

Like Italy and Sweden, Denmark now has one of the tightest regulatory set-ups for online casinos in Europe. Gaming firms must meet strict player safety, security, and software requirements in order to acquire a remote license. Operators must make safeguards to protect ID, monitor players' gambling to protect problem gamblers, and verify the origin of player funds if needed. The Danish Gambling Authority is required by law to hold a register of players who have requested temporary or permanent exclusion from any online casino in Denmark.

At online casinos, Denmark players are also restricted from depositing more than kr.10,000 into a gambling account.

Live Betting and Casinos

Denmark has around half a dozen casinos, all regulated by the Danish Gambling Authority. Most casinos open in the afternoon and through the night.

Three of the best casinos in Denmark are:

Casino Marienlyst: Casino Marienlyst is Denmark's oldest casino, with views out over the Oresund. It opened in 1902 after then-Crown Prince Frederik gave royal approval. The casino offers American Roulette, blackjack, and slots. There is also a small poker room spreading Texas Hold'em and Omaha.

Royal Casino Aarhus: One of Denmark's most scenic casinos, Royal Casino is open from 3pm to the early hours. Slot machines open at 3pm with dealer table games opening at 7pm. The casino has over 100 slot machines and TouchBet roulette terminals. Poker players have enjoyed Hold'em cash games here since 1996. The Royal Casino was the first casino in the country to offer poker.

Casino Copenhagen: Denmark Casino Copenhagen is one of the biggest casinos in the country. American Roulette is the favoured form of the Devil's Wheel, but Ultimate Texas Hold'em is also popular. The "slot department" holds over 140 machines, with bets of up to kr.1-200 allowed. The Denmark casino also hosts over 40 linked progressive jackpot machines. Each linked machine has four separate jackpots - Mini, Minor, Major, and Grand.

Poker fans in the capital can also enjoy a large cardroom with six tournaments running every week. No Limit Texas Hold'em and Omaha cash games run through the week. Wagering limits range from kr.1,000-3,000.

Poker: As in much of Europe, Texas Hold'em and Omaha are the more popular variations with Danish players. Most casinos in Denmark have their own cardrooms, and online poker is popular in Denmark as well. The prestigious World Poker Tour (WPT) has held legs in Denmark in recent years, as has PokerStars' European Poker Tour (EPT). On a basic level, though, poker rooms are usually found within existing casinos.

Horse Racing: Organised racing has been taking place in Denmark since the 19th Century. Dansk Galop (Danish Jockey Club) is the main operator. Land-based betting on horses is still overseen by the Danske Spil monopoly. Bets can be placed at over 4,000 PitStop betting shops around the country.

Lottery: Lottery-style games can also be played in Denmark. Once again, Danske Spil has a monopoly on the sale of lottery tickets in special kiosks. The first lottery was held in 1948, and much of the ticket profits in Denmark's lottery go to good causes. The Danske Lotto (Danish Lotto) can be played across Europe via the internet. Draws take place on Wednesday and Saturday.

Denmark is also one of the countries that holds the "Onsdags Lotto" (Viking Lotto). This is run in multiple countries like Estonia, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The Viking Lotto jackpot is set at a minimum kr.7m.
